The Red Lion Will Be Closed From January 12th And Re-Opening on January 28th 2026
Nestled in the Hampshire countryside, The Red Lion is a traditional country pub set in the beautiful village of Mortimer West End, surrounded by picturesque walking routes, woodlands, and scenic lanes that connect to the Kennet & Avon Canal and the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just a short stroll or drive away are the historic Silchester Roman City Ruins, the ancient Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, featuring impressive remains and a nearby Amphitheatre — one of the best-preserved in Britain.
Perfectly positioned in Mortimer West End, North Hampshire, between Reading, Basingstoke, and Newbury, The Red Lion offers the best of both worlds — classic British dishes, authentic Thai food, and our famous Sunday roasts. Enjoy a cosy pint by the fire, a flavoursome Thai curry, or a hearty roast dinner with family and friends. With a great choice of real ales, fine wines, and a warm, friendly atmosphere, there’s always a reason to visit The Red Lion.
The Red Lion did not start as a pub. It was originally a small farmhouse on a copyhold known since about 1700 as Kinchins, after Simeon Kinchin. Copyholders were often absentee landlords with tenants in occupation.
This has long been another pub much favoured by walkers, welcomed in winter by a great open log fire.
